New Jersey Italian Hot Dog

The classic New Jersey Italian Hot Dog is served on a pizza bread roll. If you can’t find those in your area, use a sub or hoagie roll. The average hot dog bun will not be large enough for this savory Italian feast!

Cook time: 35 minutes
Serves 4-6

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • Salt
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch chunks
  • 2 medium green peppers, sliced into strips
  • 1 large yellow or white onion, sliced into strips
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, or a mixture of oregano, basil and rosemary
  • 8 beef hot dogs, preferably with natural casings
  • 4 sandwich rolls
  • Mustard

Directions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan, skillet or griddle until hot. Put the potatoes in the pan in one layer and fry on medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes without touching them. Afterwards, use a metal spatula to scrape the potatoes off the bottom of the skillet, and flip them. Add salt to the potatoes, and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Do not flip or stir. Let them cook.
  2. After 2-3 minutes the potatoes should be partially browned. Remove them from the heat and place into a bowl and set aside.
  3. Turn the heat to high and add the peppers and onions. Make sure they’re evenly spaced in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes. After 2-3 minutes undisturbed, add salt and flip the peppers. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, untouched. This allows the peppers to brown, and even blacken, in spots.
  4. Add the Italian seasoning and the potatoes to the pan, stir the mixture, and cook over medium-high heat until they are soft and browned, about 8-10 minutes.
  5. Heat a grill or a skillet to cook your hot dogs. Grill or fry until done to your taste, and set aside. Note: Don’t boil your dogs for this recipe.
  6. Slather mustard on both sides of the sandwich roll. Spicy mustard adds a nice zing!
  7. Use two hot dogs per roll
  8. Top with as many potatoes, peppers and onions that fit.

And Badda Bing! It’s done. Serve immediately and enjoy!
